A Waterford author, who just had her first novel published, soon could be watching her story on TV.John Wells Productions and Warner Brothers purchased the rights to turn into a series Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune by Roselle Lim. This is the seventh novel she has written, but the first to be published. It hit the shelves June 11.Lim will get producer billing and can be as involved as she wants in the production.“It should be exciting,” said Lim. “It should be great.”There have been no official announcements about the series will be broadcast.Lim’s story takes place in San Francisco, home of the oldest Chinatown in North America. The setting was inspired by Lim’s birthplace in Manila, which houses the oldest Chinatown in the world. The novel centres around food and magic, two things that Lim connects with.“I eat more than I cook,” she said. “I want to try everything and taste everything. I’m passionate about food and I’ve always loved books that have food in them.”Lim’s story is infused with “magical realism” inspired by superstitions.“I grew up with these superstitions that were kind of made for a bit of magical experience when you view it in an everyday context.”Lim emigrated from the Phillipines to Canada when she was young and grew up in Toronto. After marrying a Norfolk man, she moved to Waterford. She said getting a book published is a tough experience.“You have to be used to rejection,” Lim said. “It’s so hard.”While she spends a lot of her time writing, she uses art as an escape.“Right now, I do art as a hobby I enjoy, where writing is my job,” said Lim.“I do embroidery, illustration. When you’re writing you need something creative to take the pressure off.”Lim is currently working on her next book, which will be set in Paris and also include food and magic. It is expected to be published in July 2020.astaylor@postmedia.com read more
