Juneau committee asks for additional sales tax on pot

first_imgJuneau’s Marijuana Committee has decided to recommend the Assembly consider an 8 percent tax on marijuana sales.The Juneau Empire reports that committee members voted 5-2 Thursday in favor of the 3 percent tax on marijuana on top of Juneau’s regular 5 percent sales tax. The issue will be up for voter approval next fall if the Assembly approves the committee’s recommendation.Committee members who approved of the marijuana tax argued that supporters of Ballot Measure 2, which legalized marijuana last year, voted for marijuana to be regulated like alcohol. The city taxes alcohol sales at 8 percent.Members who voted against the proposal cited the fact that the Alaska Marijuana Control Board hasn’t yet released its final regulations for the marijuana industry.last_img read more
